Wireless LANs and 'neighborhood capture'
نویسنده
چکیده
A new capture effect, ‘neighborhood capture’, is described, which arises when Ethernet-type protocols are employed in multiple-cell wireless local area networks (WLANs) that re-use RF channels. Given the small number of channels available, co-channel cells cannot all transmit simultaneously without causing interference on one another. A carrier-sense contention-based MAC protocol can allocate channel bandwidth among co-channel cells dynamically and in a distributed manner, but if used without precautions, it may lead to channel capture; mutually non-interfering cochannel neighbours could deprive other co-channel neighbours of access. In general, there will be instability, with the channel retained by a group of cells for long time intervals. This would cause delays, with negative impact on QoS. This paper describes the problem and presents a remedy.

متن کاملPerformance of Wireless Lans in Radio Channels
Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) are faced with the presence of hidden terminals and the possibility of capture when operating in multipath radio channels. These phenomena complicate both their design and performance analysis. This paper considers the performance of wireless LANs with Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) protocol in fading channels. To assess the...
متن کاملThroughput and Packet Delay Analysis of CSMA/CA Protocols for Wireless LANs in Multipath Fading, Shadowing and Near-far Effects
The channel throughput and packet delay of wireless media access control (MAC) protocols with Rayleigh fading, shadowing and capture effect are analyzed. We consider CSMA/CA protocols as the wireless MAC protocols, since CSMA/CA protocols are based on the standard for wireless Local Area Networks (LANs) IEEE 802.11. We analyze the channel throughput and packet delay for three types of CSMA/CA p...

E-mail: [email protected] Over the past few years the use of wireless LANs has evolved from a curiosity to a necessity. When we travel to many Starbucks or McDonalds, visit an airport or check into a hotel or motel the chances are high that we are able to access the Internet via a wireless LAN connec...
متن کاملMitigating Node Capture Attack in Random Key Distribution Schemes through Key Deletion
Random Key Distribution (RKD) schemes have been widely accepted to enable low-cost secure communications in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). However, efficiency of secure link establishment comes with the risk of compromised communications between benign nodes by adversaries who physically capture sensor nodes. The challenge is to enhance resilience of WSN against node capture, while maintainin...
